Meet the founder

Maya, founder

Lab 961 is a small perfume lab in Jal el Dib. I compose our scents myself, number them instead of naming them after anyone else, and sell each one in two sizes so you can try a scent before you commit to it. The price is the formula, the bottle and our time. That is all you pay for: there is no famous name on the bottle and no advertising in the price.

A perfumer's bench: blotter strips in a glass beaker, small corked vials in a wooden rack and a glass pipette

The bench where every number starts

Blotter strips and small glass vials: each formula is weighed, written down and tested here before it gets a number.

How we make a scent

  1. 1

    We sketch it

A place, a fruit, a season: we write down the idea and the notes that could carry it.

  2. 2

    We weigh and test

Small trial blends, on blotter strips and on skin, adjusted one gram at a time.

  3. 3

    We let it rest

The chosen formula rests in a closed bottle before we smell it again and decide.

  4. 4

    It gets a number

Only then is it bottled in 50 and 100 ml and added to the shop.
